Why humans in the publishing loop matter

Slashdot is running a blurb about how United Airlines stock got dumped because of an outdated story that got picked up by Google News. The question for Google now, I think, is what to do with “news” that doesn’t have a dateline / date stamp on it. The original story was from 2002, when in fact United was entering bankruptcy. Should Google News just ignore stories without time and date stamps? Clearly there’s a risk as automation takes over content publication and dissemination. Do these things need to have a person checking on them before they get bumped up to the Google News homepage?
