NARC: News Article Revision Comparator
Back in late 2006 some of my students (Aaron St. Claire and Matthew Fong) started working on a system called the News Article Revision Comparator (NARC). Matthew continued on with the project as his capstone this past semester at Georgia Tech and recently put up the site describing the project here: http://narc.computational-journalism.com/. In short, the application monitors news stories on the BBC site and keeps track of how stories have changed over time. Using a GreaseMonkey plugin these changes are then visualized inline with the original text on the BBC site so that a user can quickly see exactly what has been updated in the news article.
